Our furry pals are very expressive, and are often quite good at communicating when they want treats or food. However, they aren’t as clear when it comes to letting on that they aren’t feeling well. In some cases, signs of injuries may be obvious. However, at other times, the clues may be more subtle. Read on as a Dahlonega, GA vet lists some signs that your beloved pet needs immediate veterinary care.

Respiratory Distress

Coughing, choking, wheezing, gasping, rapid breathing, and other signs of breathing difficulty are all red flags. Heavy panting can also be an indication of trouble.

Tummy Trouble

An occasional incident of vomiting or diarrhea may not be anything serious, but it’s best to check with your vet anyway. Frequent issues, however, are another story. A lack of appetite is also a warning sign, as is blood in your pet’s vomit or feces.

Lack Of Mobility

Collapse, seizures, fainting, trouble walking, staggering, and/or paralysis are all indications that an animal needs veterinary care right away. These are definitely not ‘wait and see’ issues!

Uncharacteristic Behavior

Sudden and/or extreme changes in your pet’s usual behavior definitely warrant a trip to the vet. For example, if your normally-sweet dog is suddenly growling, there may be something going on. Other examples would be a friendly pet that suddenly withdraws, or an aloof pet that begins begging for attention. Unusual vocalizations, such as yowling or whining, are also cause for concern.

Difficulty Relieving Themselves

If your furry friend seems to be having trouble relieving themselves, contact your vet immediately. This can be a sign of some very serious medical issues! Constipation is also a sign of trouble, as are changes in the color, smell, texture, or amount of your pet’s waste.

Confusion

Disorientation, dizziness, and confusion can be indicative of some major issues, such as strokes. These definitely should be considered medical emergencies!

Discharge

Heavy, smelly, or discolored discharge from the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, or, in female pets, the vagina, are all major red flags.

Discolored Gums

Red, discolored, or pale gums are another cause for concern. This can be a sign of many different medical issues, including heat stroke, liver trouble, heart problems, and poisoning, to name a few.
